SBSO & Our Youth

The Saginaw Bay Youth Orchestra

First Annual
Play! 2017

The Saginaw Symphony Association is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the Saginaw Bay Youth Orchestra since its recreation in January of 2007.

As part of our celebration, our 2016-2017 conductors—Roderick J. Bieber and James Hargett—are inviting all Saginaw Bay Youth Orchestra AND Saginaw Youth Orchestra alumni to join the present-day SBYO during its Spring Youth Spectacular concert on Sunday, May 7, at 3 pm.

Happy 10th Anniversary to those of you who played with conductors Roderick J. Bieber, James Hargett, Jason Pfeifer, Brittany Shaughnessy, and David Valesek.

Also . . . Happy “50th-Plus” Anniversary to those who participated in the “earlier” years of the Saginaw Youth Orchestra under the batons of earlier Saginaw Symphony Orchestra conductors, starting back in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Join in the celebration! Choose the option that best meets your preferred level of involvement.

1. Play Strauss' Radetzky March with the present-day SBYO at the May 7 concert. Music will available for download once you register.

2. Attend the May 7 Spring Youth Spectacular to reconnect with other alumni and support the performers.

3. Submit a memory from your time with the Youth Orchestra.

SBSO Youth Orchestra

The Saginaw Bay Youth Orchestra is the Great Lakes Bay Region's only community youth orchestra serving the Region and the Thumb. It is geared toward advanced middle & high school aged string players and high school wind, brass, and percussion players. It has members from Vassar to Mount Pleasant, from Unionville to Frankenmuth, and everywhere between!

Rehearsals are on Sundays from 2-5 pm at the Temple Theatre in Saginaw.

Membership in the SBYO is decided through an audition process and is open to all enthusiastic and hard-working young musicians throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region. SBYO follows the orchestral practice of auditioning for chairs that are open.

SBYO reserves the right to hold seating hearings at the beginning of each session in order to seat students appropriately within the section. The prescribed scale(s) and selected excerpt(s) are distributed at least one week prior to the hearing. When seating hearings are scheduled, all students are required to play privately for a 2-to-3-member committee; non-adherence to this policy may be terms for dismissal.

Audition for concertmaster (violin) is held in the fall of each season. Selected excerpts are distributed via email on the Monday prior to the audition. Students may be asked to play a short solo of their choosing. This blind audition is heard by the conductor(s) and available string specialists.
